Soils with high clay content typically have poor drainage. Even though the surface appears dry, the soil may be compacted and saturated where the roots are. This can lead to root rot and other plant diseases, along with poor plant performance. Adding our compost to clay soils builds organic matter, which in turn improves drainage, adds nutrients, and builds a favorable soil microorganism population to help your plants defense system against disease.
Loam type soils typically drain properly, and contain good organic matter levels. In this situation, adding a lower level of our compost would be recommended to provide the nutrients your plants need while maintaining a favorable organic matter level. The added benefit of disease suppression would also be gained.
